By hands on experience the child’s mind grasps the idea inherent in the materials and forms an abstraction. Concrete to abstract is a three step instruction approach. The first step is called the concrete stage that involves physically manipulating objects. The second step is called the representational stage that involves using image to represent objects. The final step is called the abstract stage that involves using only numbers and symbols. Concrete to abstract allows students to understand advanced math concepts. The concrete stage helps to bring concept to life as the more to the pictorial stage. The concrete stage helps learners make connection between the objects they just handled and pictorial presentation.
